Named after the former Chair of the league (see Hall of Fame) Bert Astles this was another competition introduced by long time Secretary Tony Crompton.
Pairs of qualified players from the same club compete in knock-out best of 3 frame matches through to a best of 3 final. Players play alternate shots from their teams first shot in each frame. Without giving too much away (!) this format doesn’t always see the winner of the frame toss breaking off as it may be very beneficial to know in what order your opponents are playing.
It is a handicap competition with teams given a handicap of half of the 2 players, making up the pair, combined handicap as allocated by the Trophy / Competition Secretary.
For example, 2 players off 30 and 20 handicap each = a team total of 50 points divided in half = a team handicap of 25 which will be recorded on the scoreboard at the start of each frame. Often a team with 1 high and 1 low handicap win out.
