In the 2001-02 season the league committee appointed it's first competitions and trophies secretary (Tony Crompton) to try to address the on-going problem of lost trophies and low number of competition entries.
It was felt that a possible way forward was to have more diverse competitions and Steve Redwood of Morley provided a new trophy and cash prize money for the first new league competition for 18 seasons. The innovative format in theory includes every player in every team because every team is asked to hold it's own competition to decide their team Champion. Every team Champion then plays all the other team Champions from their respective division to decide a Divisional Champion and the (currently 3) Divisional Champions then play a round-robin handicap competition to decide the overall 'Redwood Hire Champion Trophy' title. This means that the eventual winner can indeed call themselves the 'Champion' of the League.
